Getting started

1. Get an API key at console.soniox.com
2. Click the Subtly icon to open the side panel, go to Settings, paste the key, and press Save
3. Press Test key to confirm it works
4. Go back, pick the tab you want translated and a target language, then press Start subtitles

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need my own API key?

Subtly has no server and does not resell speech recognition. You use your own Soniox account, which keeps the cost transparent and means your audio does not pass through anyone else's hands.

Chrome asks me to choose a source. Is that normal?

Yes. Chrome does not always allow direct tab audio capture, particularly when you select a tab other than the one in focus. Pick the same tab in Chrome's dialog and make sure the option to share the tab's audio is ticked.

The subtitle box does not appear on the page

Reload the page and start again. The extension can only insert the box into pages that were loaded after it was installed or reloaded. If the side panel shows a yellow warning, that is exactly this case - the subtitles are still readable in the side panel itself.

I cannot hear the video while subtitles are running

That is a bug, not intended behaviour. Please report it along with the website you were on.

The translation is often wrong

Translation quality comes from Soniox, not from the extension. Setting the correct spoken language hint in Settings usually improves it noticeably.

Where does my data go?

Only to Soniox, and only while you have a session running that you started yourself. See the Privacy Policy.

Including these details makes a fix much faster:

• The website you were on, what you expected, and what happened instead
• Output from chrome://extensions → Subtly → service worker, the lines starting with [subtly]
• Output from the page's own console (F12 → Console), also looking for [subtly]
